I wholeheartedly believe that learning how to navigate conflict and hard conversations is at the core of the human experience, and that these are actually opportunities to learn how to meaningfully engage.
I didn't always feel this way though. Growing up, I had to learn how to navigate conflict by experiencing and practicing conflict. Bullying experiences, parent's divorce, and well, life taught me that being open to different perspectives is an asset, and that all spaces need to be inclusive of people with varying needs, capacities, identities and strengths.
These earlier life experiences really culminated when in 2020 I was part of the team at Neighbours United that brought Deep Canvassing to Canada. I was developing programs on how to use skills in storytelling and compassionate curiosity to connect with people across the political spectrum on conflicting issues, and I thought "I think I'm training volunteers basic skills in conflict resolution..." and I wanted to learn more.
Today, Deep Canvassing is at the root of my approach to conflict, and I blend its' principles with my
professional training and education in conflict management, mediation, coaching, and facilitation.
